The Yosemite Kennel Club was founded in 1964.
In 1973 the club was sanctioned by the American Kennel Club to begin holding sanctioned matches, a huge step towards the clubs ultimate goal of bringing an AKC licensed show to the Merced area, where championship points and obedience degrees could be earned. This goal was achieved on Friday November 24, 1978, when Yosemite Kennel Club hosted its first AKC all breed dog show at the Merced County fairgrounds. A total of 1653 dogs in 118 breeds were entered in the first all breed dog show and obedience trials, with entries coming from as far away as New York, Pennsylvania and Alaska. A champion Welsh Terrier from Richmond Virginia won the first Best in Show, CH Copperboots Wee Blaste, owned by Mr and Mrs O.W.McClung.
In 1979, Yosemite Kennel Club held its second all breed dog show with entries totaling 1850, with 121 different breeds attending. To date, 2011, Yosemite Kennel Club continues to bring the finest, annual, American Kennel Club sanctioned all breed dog shows and obedience trials to the Merced area.

The Yosemite Kennel Club has regularly offered both obedience and conformation training classes for the public at nominal prices. In the obedience classes the dogs learn to heel, come on command, stand for examination, to sit and down stay.
In conformation classes you receive instruction on ring procedure, how to show and gait the dog and the do's and don'ts
of the show ring.

The club  holds monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, at Round Table Pizza on Olive Ave in Merced. The meetings begin at 7 pm.  Guests are always welcome.

In the past Yosemite Kennel Club held purebred dog exhibitions at the Merced Mall. The club participated in the Merced County Fair, holding dog exhibitions and walking in the Fair parade. The club held fund raising rummage sales and aided
the 4H obedience programs each year.

Yosemite Kennel Club members have always had a continual interest in legislation on both the local and state levels that concerns all dogs and dog owners.

Yosemite Kennel Club has made monetary donations on an annual basis to the local animal shelters, the Sheriffs K9 program,
Concerned Dog Owners of California and PetPac.
